well I was just wondering out of curiousity. do you ever buy christmas or birthday gifts for your pets? I do that for my guide dog not much for christmas but always did for her birthday, and some people told me it's strange, and useless since she doesn't understand and doesn't know when it's her birthday. that could be true, but it's not that she should understand that it's her birthday, I just care about her enough to think she deserves it just like we give gifts to our children. and besides it could be strange maybe, but no one of us has ever been a dog so who knows if they really don't know when it's their birthday... ok this whole thing sounds horrible but couldn't find a better way to say it.
by the way, stella's birthday is in a week and I still don't know what to buy her... any ideas?

No it's not strange at all to buy pets presents. I buy my cat Oreo Christmas presents every year. I normally buy her cat toys and a new bed each year since hers normally gets to much hair in it by the time Christmas rolls around. I'd buy her birthday presents but I haven't the slightest idea as to of when she was born. I had recieved from someone before me and that person wasn't really sure since Oreo was found as a kitten on the streets.

I buy my cat toys and treats whenever the mood hits me or when I see something I think he will like. I'm sure the concept of Christmas means nothing to him so I don't just look for things at that time of the year.

Yes, I bought my Shadow-Kitty presents for his birthday, well actually the date of his adoption. I never knew his real birthday, so I always just used the day he became mine. I did the same at Christmas time. But like Becky, I also bought him things whenever I felt like it. Shadow is gone now, but I plan to do the same for Emma, my new cat. I think for some people, especially those like me who don't have children, our pets become like that. It's a pleasure to get things that make them happy, even if they don't understand what time of year it is, or if it's no special time of year at all. Sometimes I'll pick up little gifts for my human friends and family as well, just because I want to. I think the unexpected gifts can mean more than the ones on birthdays or Christmas.

I buy my little dog presents whenever I feel like it, and some people tell me that he's to! spoilt. To me, my dog is my baby, and nobody will tell me otherwise. I buy him stuff, cause I consider him my child, as I don't have any human children. So, I don't think that buying your dog birthday and Kristmass presents is silly at all.

I don't think it's strange to give gifts to pets if you truly love them. A friend of mine got the kittens a few Christmas gifts and even made cards for them. I've even heard of cat owners who make tuna cakes on the kitties' birthdays for example. I'm going to do that in August when my kitties turn a year old.

Okay, so it's self-indulgent and means more to us than it does to them, but then, it's a treat, and it's not doing anyone any harm. Also, I tend to make it a point to give the dogs something extra at christmas, since they're hanging around watching and smelling while we cook and eat all that wonderful food, so it seems only fair that they should have something yummy and bad for them at the same time.

I don't think it's strange at all, lorrie. if I wanna buy something for my dog, or a human for that matter, I do it cuz I care.

I would be a hypocrite to say I think it is blind.. I hang christmas stockings for my pets every year.. I even have little tree ornaments with their pictures. Heck I feel guilty if I eat a treat and do not give them one of theirs.. I am a big woosy when it comes to animals. Mine are spoiled rotten.

I even go as far as picking my dog up, and carrying him around in my arms, and letting him sleep on my bed.

my cat does that, if my dog slept on my bed I should find another place to sleep... but my cat doesn't sleep on my bed, he sleeps on me... he hasmore than half a bed for himself but he needs to stay there with his about 6 kg...

When I get a guide dog, I'd always buy both Birthday and Christmas presents for it. They don't cost much and how would we like it if someone didn't buy us Birthday and Christmas presents?

Well, I don't think it's strange. I buy presents for my little fox terrier/dauksund mix. When I come back from the store, she smells the sacks. Sounds unbelievable, but it's true.

Our pets are like our kids, for those of us who don't have human children yet. I will also buy my guide dog gifts on his or her birthday and Christmas.

I buy my dog and cats presents on Christmas and on their birthdays and just when I find something I like for them as well.
